The courage to do what no one in your circle has done
Are you the average of the five people you spend the most time with?
They say you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. What if those five people aren’t in your industry and don’t share the same mindset on work or business? What are you supposed to do?
When you come to the realization that the people you are closest to don’t have the same life, money, or work values as you, it’s a rude awakening. You start to remember when they didn’t understand why you had to work so hard, why you needed to create and build on the weekend, or why you were constantly recording content and editing. They just don’t understand.
When you dare to grow outside of your comfort zone, try new things, and meet new people, that’s where the real growth happens. If your environment is not helping you become the person you’re destined to be, you need to plant yourself in a new place.
I’m not suggesting discarding your family and friends. Keep the people who support you and love you close!
When I left my corporate job to build my consulting businesses, I knew I would need to surround myself with people with similar missions.
I needed to build relationships with people who were like-minded and working on building similar businesses as me. Entrepreneurship is very lonely, but if you have a community you can lean on and learn from, it changes everything - from your motivation and focus to your growth.
My suggestion for you is to create a plan for what’s necessary to get you from Point A to Point Winning! That’s what I’ve done and will continue to do.
Having the courage to do things no one in your group has done doesn’t mean you must do them alone. It means it’s time to buckle up and begin your networking and community-building journey. There are 9 billion people in this world. If your circle is too small, expand it. Invite new people in. Promote what you’re working on. And be consistent with it.
HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES:
Creating new friendships - If you want friends who share your mindset, join an online community (like She’s Interesting 😉) to find like-minded friends.
Finding business and industry connections - Sign up for events and local dinners with associations in the same industry as you and create a list of people you’d like to build relationships with, then reach out to them on LinkedIn or Instagram wherever they spend their time.
Building your personal brand - You need to put yourself out there. Your vibe attracts your tribe. Start the groundwork on your personal brand and begin to share it with the world confidently…or, at the very least, your LinkedIn network.
Many of the great experiences I’ve had in my career were because of my personal brand…because of how I show up in the world. Job opportunities and speaking engagements were all brought into my life because of my hard work and the brand I built. I share what I am interested in, what I stand for and what I can do. That is the recipe that attracts the right people into my life.
